This technique consists of making very small perforations or lines on the
material used with a very fine needle, it is quite similar to the way a tattoo
is done. The artist then applies ink or oil paint which fills in the scratches
or lines completing the design.

A jewellers loupe is required due to the fine
detail the artist wishes to produce. Finished results are lifelike and spectacular !

Most people work on light surfaces such as ivory, this is the traditional method of scrimshaw. What Gaetan has popularized is the method of reverse scrimshaw - done on dark surfaces. Not many artists are willing to work on a black backgrounds. This is due to the difficulty of working in reverse. The challenge is that the artist must think in reverse. Working on black background consists of making the subject burst out of the dark, while on a white background - you just have to play with the shadows.

Gaetan always likes to start with the subjects eyes, This is what really give a lifelike quality to the work. This is a more difficult way to do it but it is also the most spectacular! You can see it on the ''master pieces'' which done on a whole section of wate buffalo horn. It can take up to 200 hours to complete such a piece.
